Although we are returning the unit we got (it was not brand new but a customer return) from Amazon, JVC Professional products has produced an excellent solution here for both pro and non-pro video enthuisists. I igonred what the one user said about their machine "died" after 3 months and no way to contact JVC...they must be too foolish? to know JVC Pro divsion handles service and warrenty on this product and the customer service from JVC has always been top notch!

Now as for the product, if you shoot in MiniDV without a deck, you must use your camera and invariably wear out its drive mechanism doing so. I looked at the prices USED MiniDV decks are selling for at online auctions and said - No way will I pay THAT for someone elses USED deck so I started looking at new decks...wow some of those go up to the $4000 range!
This JVC product offers you much wider range of features than the more expensive machines. It replaces my present DVD write/ read deck gives me full write/read capability with MiniDV and throws in a 40GB drive to boot! Where else can you get this for under $1000? If the shortcomings that other posters left here concern you I doubt ANYONE else has a machine that can perform those functions either. This machine does everythng and more for us. My real only complaint with it is the DVD eject button is in stupid place, under the DVD tray when opened AND they didnt put EJECT function on the remote. The four stars are for Amazon sending me an "open box" unit at first, no I dont spend over 800.00 for anything not brand spanking new if described as new.

Do not buy

If you just want to look at the screens recorded, that's fine. If you want to export the file to the other device or DVD, forget this. Very limited DVD format for burning. DV output port to PC requires special device driver from Victor company in Japan. and the device file can not be found in the world. I was deeply disappointed with this machine and JVC.

I you must throw your money away

My boss bought this piece of junk brand spanking new from B&H photo. We have a bunch of educational minidv's that needed to be burned on to dvds for instructional purposes - nothing big - no editing required just so that they can be view on computer. So we bought this. Worked fine until three months (or so) later - it stopped working. I doesn't do a darn thing! It won't eject the dvd, won't burn, forget about it playing anything! It's the most expensive paper weight we own. We can't get JVC to return our emails. There's no support anywhere! We call the JVC numbers and we get the customer service automatic runaround into a dead end. We're at our wits end!

Nice Device

This product is really works and makes me happy. I have a lot of footage that I never preview because I don't have player before, I used to capture my footage from camcorder, but since this player arrived earlier than I expected from amazon, I can log & capture all day. This product is problem solver.
