I have had this printer for about 3 years and it still runs great. It scans like a dream, I have used the fax machine without any problems. It prints and copies very nicely. I used this for much of my college years and it never failed me. My ink cartridges last forever. I am always surprised by how much I could print before needing to get another refill. And, my other printers were never this close in quality for the price. I think I paid about $250. in 2003 and have never regretted it. I have not really used the photo feature, so I can't comment of that.

I'm biased towards HP since I used a lot of their fine test and measurement equipment at the university.
I expected the printer to work very well, and the print cartridges to be a little bit too expensive. That's OK.
It worked very well for the first year. Then I got the message:
"Remove and check cartridge in right stall"
I removed and re-inserted the cartridge. No luck.
I rebooted the printer. No luck.
I replaced the $$$ cartridge. No luck.
I cleaned the contacts with alcohol. No luck.
I spent hours researching the problem online.
Based on what I found, I opened up the printer, cleaned it, put it back together. I'm an electrical engineer, so this was not a hard task. No luck.
I opened and cleaned it a second time. No luck.
I found plenty of other frustrated people online. Some could fix this problem, some could not.
I've wasted sooo many hours on it.
I fantasize about smashing this piece of junk with a baseball bat and posting a video to Youtube. Think "Office Space".
No more HP printers for me. I'm switching to a Canon Pixma MP610.

I had purchased this printer for over 2 years, I barely use this printer in the past. I would say it is a good one to use. But recently, I purchased a new cartridges for it, after put them in, the screen shows the cartridges are not in the right stall, need be removed and reinstall correctly. I tried several time, but it won't work, I called customer sevice guy, I was told to buy a new one or I need to pay for 299$ for repair because the product is disconnected now. I also been told if I can get tech guy on the call, I would need to pay for 30+$. I opted it out, but I am wondering is this a Software glitch or real the product problem..

I have my printer for about 4 years, I think it's great, but it there is a power failure, or the light blinks forever, and I don't know how I fixed it, but after hours of shutting it off, disconnecting all the wires,
it will finally start printing again, if not for that you can't beat this one.
