Description
The CanoScan LiDE 80 Color Image Scanner has all the power and performance you need for scanning detailed images, copying documents and e-mailing your favorite photos - even preserving your original negatives. The resolution of the LiDE 80 scanner reaches up to an exceptional 2400 x 4800 dpi for film and photos with 48-bit color depth for over 281 trillion possible colors. Yes, trillion. You can scan in photos fast and easily, plus you can now digitize all of your favorite 35mm film negatives with the included Film Adapter Unit. The USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection lets you scan images fast, with previews available in under 10 seconds. Scan multiple photos at once to save even more time on large projects. "Multi-Scan mode" automatically scans all the pictures placed on the platen glass in a single pass, preparing a separate image file for each. It will even adjust any slightly misaligned photos. Additionally, the LiDE 80 scanner automatically removes many of the scratches and dust particles typically found on older photos.Canon scanner technology doesn't stop with performance. Convenience features include exclusive Z-Lid expansion top, which lifts up to 1-inch high and stays flat for scanning thick books and magazines. Most other scanner covers can only lift at an angle, so the scans can be incomplete or illegible. For easier operation, just one cable is needed for both power and data connection - no additional AC adapter is required. Four easy-access buttons help automate the scanning process, save images to PDF, e-mail items or simply make a copy of that important report. You can even save your images directly to CDs as easily as scan, click and burn. And last, but certainly not least, with a lid that has a stylish, aluminum spin-carved finish, the LiDE 80 scanner will look great on any desktop.
A film scanner that allows you to easily preserve negatives, the Canon LiDE 80 is a remarkably slim unit that's ready to meet big expectations. Don't let the 1.5-inch height fool you--Canon's Z-lid design allows it to perfectly accommodate originals up to one inch thick.
48-bit color and a 16-bit grayscale provide rich tones and clear contrasts; the 2,400 x 4,800 non-interpolated resolution handles the rest with clean, crisp detail. USB 2.0 interface means there's a single cord that supplies both power and connection, as well as a speedy transfer of data.
Bundled with the scanner is an impressive array of software for both Windows and Macintosh OS systems that will allow you to convert, smooth, and organize your images in a variety of ways. Perfect for home use, the Canon LiDE 80 is backed by a one-year warranty with Instant Exchange service.

excellent scanner for everyday use

This scanner was a replacement for a much bulkier model and I love it. The thin profile means I can slip it into my laptop bag and it powers off the USB port so there are no bulky power cords to worry about storing. I use this scanner mostly for photographs and negatives, though I am thinking of moving to an all digital archive because the scan quality on documents is so good.
The software is easy to run and chock full of great features. I have a Canon digital camera as well so the photo editing software works well with my existing software. I highly recommend this scanner for ease of use and quality of output.
Not for Windows Vista

It worked fine with XP.
It worked fine with Vista, after three hours troubleshooting.
It stopped working with Vista.
It still works with XP.
So if you have Vista and love a challenge, buy this one!
bulletproof

I have had this scanner since the week Canon released it. Although I am by no means a professional, I use this scanner almost every week. I feel that the image quality is excellent, it scans quickly, and if I need to, I can do some very high resolution scans. (Most of my scans are around 300dpi, but it can do 1200dpi). The software for OS X is a little bit of a let down sometimes, but I would say 99% of the time, I have had no problems. It is a little bit noisy, but for the price, size and performance, I could care less. I have used the film feature maybe once or twice, and I was relatively pleased with the results, again, I am not a professional
Going on its third year of art school, I would say this scanner is nearly bulletproof.
Excellent Scanner

This scanner is a wonder. Easy to use with idiot proof features. I love it - sorry I did not buy it sooner.
Fine for flat stuff, but the film adapter is disappointing

I had an old Canon flatbed that gave up the ghost, so was looking forward to this new one, especially because it has a film adapter. First, and foremost, Canon's powering through the single USB cable is excellent and should be industry standard. However, it should be said that this is a film ONLY adapter - that is, it does NOT do slides (which seems like a bit of a bait; my bad for assuming, but the software does have the option of scanning positive film, so it seems like a important omission). More to the point, even when film strips/negatives are laid on the glass with the adapter, the results are slow, slow, slow and not very sharp. My suggestion: don't bother with the LiDE80 for film; just save$30 and get the LiDE65 for flatbed only. MacOSX interface is getting clunkier from generation to generation. Software bloat, I guess.
