Slik Monopod

If you looking for a monopod I feel you should look for certain features, 1. sturdy enough to hold your heavy lens and camera, 2. stay within a price range. 3. Most important having a "quick release" feature! this item met all three of my criteria, at this price worth giving a serious look.
Slik Monopod A Great Accessory

Slik EZ Pod Monopod with Pan Head and Quick-Release
Overall I like this monopod. It's sturdy and easy to take on the road with me.
The Pros: well made, strong; positive leg locking leavers; great fine height adjustment feature; quick-release feature is strong and positive, and really quick to change; the provided carrying strap makes it easy to carry.
The Cons: just too short when fully extended for me to stand upright (I'm 5'-10" - would be worse for anyone taller), so I have to stoop to use it and never get to use the neat fine height adjustment; quick-release feature requires that a compatiple shoe (one is provided with the pod) be attached to any camera or long-lense that you want to put on the pod, so be sure to get enough for all your stuff; those shoes need to be left attached to the equipment (if you don't want to be constantly putting them on and taking them off, which would defeat the purpose anyway); the shoe is bulky (fits comfortably under a SLR, but is much bigger than the base of a point-and-shoot) and prevents a camera from being set upright on a flat surface.
A long list of cons, but still doesn't overshadow a great product, well made, and fun to use.
Vital tool / monopod

I have had an early version of this monopod for over ten years. I have used it with a video camera, filming soccer games in all types of Chicago weather, with my film type SLR for telephoto stability, and just about the time that my SLIK thought it was in retirement, it is back in operation with a Cannon S5 IS camera. With minor cleaning she is ready to rock and roll again. All leg clips, the wing nut and the main spring are in `like new' condition even after years of work. The SLIK decal is so worn it can barely be read --- a definite sign of an excellent product.
Nice Monopod

If you need a tripod but there are too many people around to trip on the legs, this works great. This is the second monopod I have owned. The first one broke immediately. The Slik brand is great. It is very sturdy and looks like it will last a long time.
I would give it 5 stars but.....

I bought one of these quite awhile ago. I still have it. Its design is great as has already been covered here. Very nice and compact package with an ingenious design for the final adjustment. HOWEVER, on my unit, which is all black and no red as pictured, the tapered pinch piece on the end of the tightening knob is plastic and after only a few uses cracked and popped out the back. Now it only tightens part of the way before spinning. SO BE VERY CAREFUL tightening the knob in case this happens to you. Hopefully the newer designs replaced this piece with metal.
