Description

Impressive. Spectacular. Remarkable. There are many ways to describe this truly affordable scanner that delivers outstanding, high-resolution scans. And when you consider the CanoScan N1220U USB Flatbed Scanner's numerous innovations that make scanning fast and easy, you'll have to agree - this is one amazing machine. The slim N1220U scanner uses a single USB cable for power and connection to any compatible Mac or PC. With the simple push of its external scan button, you get superb scanning with the color depth and brilliance of more than four trillion possible colors. And its high-tech, metallic champagne finish makes this performance scanner look incredible wherever you put it. Canon's exclusive Z-Lid Expansion Top will change the way you scan bulky items, such as books and magazines. Many other scanner covers lift only at an angle and become uneven and awkward when scanning anything that isn't completely flat.

Sleek, fast and ultrathin, the Canon N1220U draws power directly from your PC through the USB cable--no external power source is required. It's also a snap to use with a single, easily programmable button that allows for simple one-touch scanning. Plus, Canon's uniquely styled Z-lid gives you an extra inch of room for scanning thicker objects like books, magazines, or anything that's no larger than a letter-size document.

Setup was a breeze. We glanced through the quick-start card, popped in the CD, and followed the onscreen instructions. (The entire manual is on the CD-ROM.) Operation went just as smoothly as setup (with only one button, it's hard to go wrong). We followed the software driver's onscreen prompts to set color depth, gray scale options, and size with just a few mouse clicks.

In our tests, we scanned a variety of documents. At about 35 seconds for a color photo and 20 seconds for a monochrome document, the overall speed was quite acceptable. We did notice a slight loss of detail in shadowed areas of photos, but in general the resulting images were clean, crisp reproductions of the originals.

However, we were disappointed by the lack of a transparency option. Also, despite its slim size and energy-efficient design, the N1220U is by no means silent; chances are you won't want to scan while taking an important phone call. If you find yourself in need of technical support, free options are found either online or via an automated phone line, but talking to a live support person costs $10 per call. Still, despite these drawbacks, the N1220U is a good scanner that's easy to use and provides clear, sharp results. --Jill Lightner

Pros:

  • Extremely easy to use
  • Lightweight and portable
  • USB connection is ideal for laptops
  • Results are clear and sharp

Cons:

  • Doesn't work with transparencies or slides
  • Expensive technical support

The Canon CanoScan N1220U USB flatbed scanner is an impressive scanner. It's packed with power, fast, easy, and ultra slim. Standing just over 1 inch high, the N1220U fits almost anywhere in a small office.

Even though it's slim, you can still scan bulky items because this remarkable and affordable scanner comes with a new expansion top, so you can scan books and magazines with no problems. Other scanner covers can become uneven because lifting them at an angle can be awkward, but the N1220U's exclusive Z-Lid expansion top opens vertically, so you can lay items down flat.

Housed in a metallic champagne finish, this high-tech scanner delivers outstanding 1,200 x 2,400 dpi scans and uses a single USB cable for power and connection. With the single push of a button, you get 42-bit scanning with color depth and brilliance of more than 4 trillion possible colors. And it is compatible with both Macintosh and PC. The N1220U weighs 3.3 pounds and measures 10.1 by 14.7 by 1.3 inches. It comes with a one-year limited warranty and the Canon Extended Service Plan.

This scanner is great!! I cannot say enough good about it. I have had mine for over two years now and I take it with me everywhere my laptop goes including courthouses where I use it to copy marriages and other court documents for genealogy. No power cord needed and is every bit as good as any of my larger HP ones stuck at home.

A HORRIBLE Scanner with Windows 2000 Professional

Since buying this nice looking piece when it first came out, I have actually NEVER had it working properly under Windows 2000. It has limped along, and at times I have found ways to work around it's consistently inconsistent behavior. When it works, as one reviewer said, it is a rather nice scanner to use BUT that is the trick.... get it to function first. Every so often, after a relatively smooth spell, I get the error saying that it is unable to find or open the TWAIN source. To this problem, there seems to be NO definite solution. I am a tweaker.... everything IS installed properly and up to date. The Canon website is NO HELP. I'll un-install and re-install, as recommended, and will get the same error for hours on end, more re-installs, USB re-installs, all related software un/re-installed, registry cleaning, etc... NOTHING works! Some time ago, while still under warranty, Canon tech support, having exhausted all possibilities, decided it was a "rare flawed hardware" problem.... so they sent me a new N1220U scanner in exchange... ha! I got the same errors with the new one until it finally worked after more tedious tweakings by me... alone. How it was resolved is still a mystery to me. It worked OK, for a little while... about a year. It scanned well that is until, as is the case now... I simply have to walk away. The dreaded TWAIN error has appeared out of nowhere again and I am simply tired of trying to fix it. I will NEVER again buy another Canon product out of principle. I will gladly throw this piece of junk away after crushing it in my bare hands later on this week.
My recommendation: Buy yourself a different scanner! ANYTHING would be better than this! If I could rate this with 1/2 a star, I would.

Easy to use, easy to store

I thoroughly researched scanners before I selected the CanoScan N122OU. Several brands and models included the high resolution output which I need for my photography hobby work, but the deciding factors for this model for me were:

1) It is very thin and lightweight -- PLUS it stores vertically on my desk.
(My older scanner was heavy, big, and took up LOTS of room.)
2) I had confidence in the Canon brand - and still do.

Having made the choice, I have had no regrets. It has been easy to set up and use (I can even use it while it is in its vertical position - quite a handy feature that I didn't realize it offered when I was making my selection.)

I am pleased and would recommend this to anyone needing a high quality, easy-to-use and easy-to-store scanner.

Good scanner when it's working. I have had nothing but problems with the software under Windows 2000. One day it will be working, the next day "Unable to open TWAIN source." Countless times unconnecting/reconnecting, unloading/reloading the software yields occasional success. Canon tech support is useless. Good hardware without good software is pointless. This scanner/software is nothing but frustration.

Bad for XP

I am speaking from personal experience not based on the quality of the scanner. I used this scanner with a computer that using WIN XP and the installation was a great headache. The installation took 2 days just to come out the right way and when it was already installed the scanner will not work with WIN XP. I've 3 scanners before and this has been the most frustrating installation yet.

I tested the scanner with another computer that uses WIN 98 and installation was very easy.

In conclusion, if you have WIN XP and you try buy this scanner your doing so at your own risk.
