Description
The Nikon Coolpix 800 features a sharp Nikkor lens and a huge memory buffer that captures continuous action at an amazing 30 frames per second. Zoom in close with the 2.5x digital zoom lens. New 2.11 megapixel technology, with super high resolution, creates brilliant colors and super sharp images. It's white balanced and has fully automatic focus, flash and metering to get the picture right every time. Or set the homing system manually for various lighting conditions. The camera takes up to 10 shots automatically (within approx. 1.5 fps) and records the most detailed image of the 10 shots using anti-jitter logic, which is effective for telephoto and macro shooting. Use Nikon's wide-angle, fish-eye or telephoto lenses to add special effects. Flash memory can store up to 200 images, and saves them in either TIFF or one of three JPEG modes. Compact design lets you take cool pics, anywhere. This camera is supplied with NikonView Version 2.5 software.
Nikon first brought 2-megapixel quality to the consumer price range with the Coolpix 950; the Nikon Coolpix 800 digital camera continues Nikon's professional legacy at an even more affordable price point. With a 2.11-million-pixel, 0.5-inch CCD and a maximum resolution of 1,600 x 1,200, the Coolpix 800 gives you topnotch picture quality and a wide array of advanced features. It lets you save images in an uncompressed TIFF format plus three JPEG compression modes, with two resolution choices. It sports a 2x Zoom-Nikkor lens and a 1.25 to 2.5x digital zoom; you can shoot subjects as close as 2.8 inches away with the Macro setting.
The Nikon Coolpix 800's autofocus is truly impressive--it uses 480 steps for incredibly accuracy. The camera also offers 256-element matrix, spot, and center-weighted exposure modes. The built-in Speedlight flash includes auto flash, flash cancel, fill flash, slow sync, and red-eye reduction modes. Battery life is also a winner--even with the LCD turned on, the Nikon Coolpix 800 offers a battery life of approximately 100 minutes using four AA alkaline batteries. It ships with an industry standard 8 MB Nikon CompactFlash memory card, which stores up to 200 images, depending on image size; you can buy optional CompactFlash cards with up to 64 MB of memory.

2.1mp that won't disappoint

Amazing, this was an expensive high quality camera just under Nikon's best 950 digital back in 1999! However, this Nikon 800 still takes pictures that will match or exceed the best cameras in the market today thanks to its original build quality internals which were not skimped on plus the all glass 2x optical zoom (38 to 76mm equivalent)f/3.5-4.8 Nikkor lens. ..it's virtually a steal at todays price and nothing today takes better pictures in it's class. Oh,did I mention it fits in pocket like a hand. :)

a step up from the tiny point-and-shoot

this is the first serious digital camera i got, and i've been pretty hapy with it. great macro, decent zoom, and fair response time. the other complaints you hear, including how it chews batteries and the like, are generally true. still, given a pocket full of batteries, i'd take this with me when i go places.
my biggest complaint is the size, it doesn't travel super well (i like to keep my hands free, i'm forgetful and often misplace things). i like to stick my camera in my pocket, and it just doesn't fit.
still, its plusses make it a decent camera. i'd check out some of the newer coolpix cameras if you were buying new and had the budget for it, they're a great line.
no zoom

This camera takes wonderful pictures but the zoom doesn't do the job. its no good for taking pictures of your child playing football but its great for pictures on a trip. be careful the lag between pushing the shutter and taking the picture is long as well as the time between pics at high quality.
Great Camera !!

I have been using this camera for about two years now. It takes great pictures and I have taken hundreds of pictures of my Grandchildren and made slideshows on Cds for them. I would absolutely buy this camera again. (I dont like the loose lens cap but I would not deduct a point for that.)
Decent camera...that's about it

I bought one of these when they came out. The first problem was the batteries. It ate them like no tomorrow. I ordered two sets of rechargeables and that fixed that. Then I bought a card reader to transfer pictures, and that really helped...until...I accidentally dropped it (not that hard) and it broke. ... It worked fine when I got it back.
My other problem is the fragility of it. It's extremely fragile. I like the camera but would not purchase it again because of this.
