Description

Precision-crafted and styled for success, the Stylus Epic has an ultra-compact, all-weather body so it's easy to carry and easy to hold, and a high-resolution 35mm f2.8 lens to help you capture high-quality images. Fully automatic operation, intelligent variable-power flash, and lots more of the advanced features that have made Stylus cameras famous worldwide are included. The powerful six-mode flash lets your pictures come out just the way you saw them. Auto color-balancing fires automatically when your subject is backlit or under artificial light so your pictures display more natural color tones. And red-eye reduction helps the subject's eyes adjust to the light level of the flash to minimize the red-eye effect. There's also Variable-power flash, Night Scene Flash, Fill-In Flash, and Flash Off to help ensure your pictures are properly lit.

The durable Olympus Stylus Epic offers full-featured, high-quality 35mm operation in an affordable package. With this ultra-portable point-and-shoot--one of the smallest 35mm cameras available--you'll never leave your camera at home.

While it's extraordinarily light and small, the Olympus Stylus Epic is heavy on styling and great features. It sports a miniature version of Olympus's signature clamshell sliding case, making it easy to turn the camera on and off. Its good-looking, high impact case is durable and splashproof.

The Olympus Stylus Epic offers the advanced features of Olympus's larger camera lines, including quartz date and time imprinting and a self timer. The Olympus Stylus Epic also has a whopping six flash modes, including automatic, red-eye reduction, and night scene.

The Olympus Stylus Epic was a pleasure to use--it was as small or smaller than many of the new Advanced Photo System (APS) cameras, but uses standard 35mm film. Its tapered design made it easy to slip in a pocket, and since it was little larger than a deck of cards, we found ourselves carrying it everywhere. If you hate lugging even a normal-size point-and-shoot around, the Olympus Stylus Epic has the portability you need.

Pros:

  • Extremely lightweight and compact
  • Durable construction
  • Wide range of flash options
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Battery compartment is hard to open

i don't remember a lot about this camera - but when i look at the pictures in the album i see good quality, very clear images even of the fast (show jumping) movements. I remember that it "died" when switch on-off by opening-clothing the lid stopped working and lens didn't "hide inside". but may be real reason was some dirt in it, it was with me everywhere. later remembering this camera dad bought newer version (same mechanism of switch on-off and still works)

Very Good Within Its' Limitations, could use more manual controls, but Spot Meter helps!

I stand by MOST of my old review, BUT after using the Epic a bit more, I've found that the Spot Metering is a good workaround for some of the camera's shutter-priority programming. Put that Spot meter to careful use, and you can get more depth-of-field and less flash use. Also, after days of heavy rain recently here in California, the Weather Resistant features are nice, too. This camera really IS a great value!

OLD REVIEW:
I'd suggest finding an old Olympus XA in good condition instead of this mostly pre-programmed techno-cam, although it does have a sharp lens..and it's very small and light too. But the autofocus is a little touchy, and it wants to shoot at f2.8 in any kind of even slightly low light. With the XA, you can choose any aperture(or ISO!)you want, and the lens is even sharper..of course, you might have to use a tripod too, but the Stylus Epic won't really acknowledge that choice!
However, within its' parameters, it's a slick little camera, and you really shouldn't have to pay too much for it; refurbished ones go for under $50.

Small, light, and strong.

The best for a tough traveling abroad.

It has no Panorama Mode, no Wireless Remote Control, no Pouch, and no CR123A Battery.

Then, it is simpler than Olympus ยต[mju:]-II.

great little camera

I am absolutely NOT a photographer. The pix I took with this camera all came out excellent.

Because of the lens, pictures come out sharp and beautiful. I've even took slides.

It's small and, so, it fits in your pocket. I take it kayakking.

But I find it unreliable. I've owned three and each time around the 1 year mark, the camera would inadvertently rewind the film as I was opening the shell.

I wish that there was a competitor. But there's really no other point and shoot with anything close to the sharpness that comes with an f2.8 lens.
